The Watcher (Margaret Widdemer)
She always leaned to watch for you,
Anxious if you were late …
In winter by the window,
In summer by the gate.
And though you mocked her tenderly
Who had such foolish care,
The long way home would seem more safe,
Because she waited there.
Her thoughts were all so full of you,
She never could forget,
And so I think that where she is
She must be watching yet.
Waiting ‘til you come home to her
Anxious if you are late
Watching from Heaven’s window …
Leaning from Heaven’s gate.
Grant eternal rest unto your faithful servant Nancy, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon her.
May her soul and the souls of all the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
Amen.
Time to rest, now, Mama Weis … and thank you.

I have so many memories of Nancy – her daughter Kristine and I were besties when we were young. Spent many nights and days at their house. Nancy would always have Phillies on in the background as she bustled around the house cleaning up after all of us kids. She made sure we had a balanced meal with mandatory milk :) she worried about us and would share newspaper articles about what was going on in the world so we would be careful. I loved visiting Nancy and Kurt’s – so many fond memories. Miss those days when life was so much simpler.
