Mr. Clifford Thomas Quann, known fondly as “Thom,” age 85, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Sunday, May 20, 2012.
Mr. Quann was born in Snow Hill, MD, on April 16, 1927, son of the late Charles Quann and Laura Brittingham Quann. He proudly served his country in the US Army following World War II and, in civilian life, was employed as a master welder for the DuPont Company, where he retired after 32 years of service.
A gifted athlete from his youth, Mr. Quann starred on many of his high school varsity squads. He would later play in semi-pro leagues in both baseball and football. He greatly enjoyed attending all types of sporting events throughout his life. His other interests included gardening, woodworking, cars, listening to Big Band music, and traveling with his wife to New England.
Active in his community, Mr. Quann was a longtime member of the Masonic order. He also served as an Assistant Scoutmaster for BSA Troop 378 (Linwood, PA), coached Little League and Teener League baseball, and umpired locally with the Delaware Umpires Association. He was a gifted mechanic and carpenter as well and was pleased to help many neighbors and friends with repairs, large and small.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Antoinette M. “Nettie” Rubino Quann, whom he married in 1949; his sons, Thomas K. Quann (Monica) of Landenberg, PA, and Robin L. Quann (Lisa) of Middletown, DE; and his sister, Mary Robinson of Gilbertsville, PA.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, May 24, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A memorial service will be held at 12:45 pm on Friday, May 25, 2012 at the funeral home, where a second visitation will begin at 11:45 am. Entombment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Delaware Hospice, 3515 Silverside Road, Wilmington, DE 19810.
