First met Dave playing (both sitting a very long bench) freshman football at William Penn. Each year he always sat behind me during homeroom period. I had a problem remembering parental notes whenever I was absent or late for school. Dave always had one ready for me, got to the point that I just had him do them all. Condolences to the family and friends.

Dave had many health issues over the years but he dealt with them courageously but he never complained about them and dealt with them like a true Colonial warrior. With the help of his loving family he had a quality life right to the end.

I was so sad to hear this news. I’ve known David and his family since we were very young. The Poffenberger’s and the Cavender’s have always called each other family and David’s sister Diane was the sister I never had as we grew up and went through school together. I am so sorry and send my condolences to David’s family. Love always, Donna

I first met Dave at WPHS over 50 years ago. A very nice reserved guy. Many, many years later we reconnected after the 35th class reunion in 2010. A small group of us began to get together to watch football, eat and drink, and reminisce about the old days. Almost always the reminiscing reigned supreme – to heck with watching the game ! That all went on for years till Covid came and we started a group text since we didn’t get together in person. Every Philly sports team and game was dissected for years by the guys – all very knowledgeable. We had some great times with all of that. Several months ago Dave contacted me about handicapped parking at the upcoming UD football game he planned to attend ( he told me he had not been to a game in many years ) and I am a volunteer at the games doing the parking for charity for the Knights of Columbus so I set him up with a prime spot. It was a beautiful day and I am sure he enjoyed it immensely. He was still the nice reserved person I met all those years ago. He will be truly missed.

I am so sorry about Dave. I am a dialysis patient and would see him at 5am to talk sports. I was shocked to learn of his passing. My close friend had a baby named Maeve about the same time Dave’s granddaughter was born. May god bless her and may Dave rest in peace.

A true and most thoughtful friend. His sincere kindness was refreshing and welcoming. Everybody should have a friend like him that you can count on to be there for you. Much love to all the Poffenberger family.

Debbie: It was great seeing you yesterday at Jack’s service. I think of you often as my classmate at Delaware City High School and the great times we had there and at Merryland Roller Rink. Please accept my sincerest sympathy and prayers for the loss of David. Peggy
