David Wayne Raughley, Sr.
Born March 4, 1959
David W. Raughley, Sr., age 56, of Newark, DE, passed away at home on July 17, 2015.
Dave was born on March 4, 1959, in Dover, Delaware, and lived in Goldsboro, MD until he was 4 years when they moved to Glen Berne Estates in Newport. He graduated from Delcastle Technical High School in 1977, where he studied Commercial Art. Even though he never directly used art in his work, it was not uncommon to find a clipboard filled with papers of drawings and doodles for future house projects or an idea that he needed to think out for work. During high school, Dave worked at JC Penney’s Auto Center, and continued working there until its closure in 1983. Dave was a skilled mechanic who went on to work at TES (railway) and Pep Boys Auto Center before becoming a Machinist at Amtrak, where he worked for 28 years.
Dave loved to create things with his hands, and was looking forward to retirement when he would be able to spend more time working on his woodworking projects; in recent months he had been able to make everything from a working wishing well to a gum ball machine.
In addition to woodworking, Dave took pride in his gardening, growing everything from squash and tomatoes to okra and watermelon. He was a great cook, who worked with precision when preparing rolls and soups, and enjoyed sharing his food with his family. His biggest joys and achievements were showing his son how to work on cars or something in the yard; finding a way to fix something at his daughter’s house; and helping and supporting his wife to accomplish tasks around the house.
He will be dearly missed by his loving wife of 37 years, Patti (Barr) and his children, Stacey and David, Jr. (Yvonne). He is also survived by his brothers, James Raughley (Marie), of Elkton and William Jones (Virginia), of Greensboro, MD. He was predeceased by his parents, Mary (Kinnamon) Raughley and William C. Raughley.
A memorial service will be held at 7:30 pm on Tuesday evening, July 28, 2015, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 7:30 pm. Interment will be private.
