Mr. Donald C. Spence, age 79, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 8, 2013, at his home.
Born in Harrisburg, PA, on December 18, 1933, Mr. Spence was the son of the late Walter E. Spence, Jr. and Alice Devonshire Spence. He made his career as a bus driver with the SEPTA Red Arrow Division in Philadelphia, retiring after many years of dedicated service.
An avid Eagles fan throughout his life, Mr. Spence also enjoyed collecting HO scale model trains. He will be long and fondly remembered as a devoted family man who delighted more than anything else in spending time with his wife, children, and precious grandchildren, all of whom he adored.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 48 years, Sara J. Redden Spence; children, John Spence of New Ringgold, PA, Shirley Bettcher of Aston, PA, Jeanette “Ginger” Parkell-Bohn of New Castle, DE, and Jennifer Godlewski of Upper Darby, PA; sister, Della Spence of Nashville, GA; and grandchildren, Donald Parkell, Christina Wise, Christina “Angel” Parkell, Connor Bohn, Cara Godlewski, Anna Godlewski, Ella Godlewski, Nicholas Godlewski, and Nathaniel Godlewski. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, David Spence, sister, Helen Benge, and granddaughter, Michelle Bettcher.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Tuesday, February 12th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Lawn Croft Cemetery, Ridge Road, Linwood, PA.
