Doris L. Gabor - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Doris L. Gabor

December 8, 1930 - September 18, 2021

Doris L. Gabor, age 90, of Chestertown, MD, formerly of Middletown, DE, passed away on Saturday, September 18, 2021.

Born in Point Lick, WV, she was a daughter of the late Leonard E.  Thomas and Esther (Gibson) Watson. After her high school graduation, she went to Michigan College of Beauty Culture in Detroit, MI. Doris owned “The Jewel”, a beauty shop on Main Street in Newark, DE, where she worked for many years. She served on the Delaware board of cosmetology from 1965-1968. After a few years, Doris decided to return to school by taking classes at the University of Delaware. She received her teaching license and became the one of the first cosmetology instructors at Paul M. Hodgson Vocational Technical High School in Glasgow, writing the curriculum for future cosmetology students. Doris retired after a total of 16 years with the State of Delaware.

In her spare time, Doris enjoyed oil painting, ceramics, all types of arts and crafts, dancing, and gardening. An avid traveler, she would go wherever the road (and her Winnebago) took her: from Nova Scotia to Florida, to Texas, to Washington State, and almost every state in between. Doris was an enthusiastic member of the Winnebago Club, and spent many years as a “snowbird” in Florida.

Doris was a faithful member of Salem United Methodist Church, and held various offices, including Grand Matron, for Newark Chapter No.10, Order of the Eastern Star. Doris loved her pet dogs, especially Snowflake and Peanut. More than anything, Doris loved her family and friends and time spent with them.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, James E. Griffith; third husband, Frank Gabor; grandson, Kevin Howard; and step mother, Juanita Thomas. Doris is survived by her son, Barry L. Harlin (Toni); half-brother, Leonard Thomas; grandchildren, Barry L. Griffith, Jr., June Enloe (Charles), and Kim Mace; five great-grandchildren; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren by marriage.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am, on Thursday, September 23, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will be held at 11 am. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance not immunized with the COVID-19 vaccine per the Governor of Delaware. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Doris’s memory to Faithful Friends, Faithful Friends Animal Society, 12 Germay Drive, Wilmington, DE 19804 or online by clicking here.
