September 29, 1927 - September 15, 2019

Dorothy Newkirk, age 91, of Middletown, DE, passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2019.

Dorothy was born in Union City, TN, on September 29, 1927, to the late William Hawes and Nellie Beth Peacock.

She was a dedicated mother first and foremost.  Her interests included family, sewing, crafts, gardening, crabbing and fishing.  She worked at the local high school in Maryland for 16 years before moving to Florida, back to Maryland and finally settling in Delaware, where she enjoyed the chorus, line dancing, sewing, bingo and Rumi cube.

She is survived by her spouse of 73 years, Roland Newkirk.  Dot was preceded in death by two brothers, William Hawes, Bud Hawes; three sisters, Helen Mae Hawes Huggins, Lillian Hawes Meeks and Martha Hawes Blythe; and two sons, Richard Newkirk and Roland Newkirk, Jr.  She was the loving and devoted mother of Randy Newkirk (Debbie), Patricia Stack, and Nancy Nolan (Thomas); daughters-in-law, Mary Rockey and Roxanne Newkirk.  She is also survived by 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and a number of other loving relatives and close friends. She was very proud of her 5-generation family!

All of us will never forget the love that she had for her husband and family, and how we benefited from her loyalty, courage, patience and generosity.  She was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Dot will be laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery in Cheltenham, MD.

In lieu of flowers, memorial may be made in her honor to the American Heart Association, 200 Continental Drive #101, Newark, DE 19713.
