Dorothy R. Cowgill

Dorothy R. Cowgill, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday, August 3, 2012, at Kent General Hospital in Dover.
Mrs. Cowgill was born in Philadelphia, PA, on January 16, 1925, the daughter of the late Andrew Ritchie and Helen Brown Ritchie.
She retired from the University of Delaware, where she worked in telephone services. Mrs. Cowgill was very active in her community and belonged to many organizations. Some of them include the Scottish Historic & Research Society of the Delaware Valley, Inc., the Northern Delaware Oratorio Society, the Choral Union of the University of Delaware, and the augmented choir at Grace Methodist Church. She also sang in the choir at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member, and was a mentor to some of the children at the West Park Elementary School.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Cowgill was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William H. Cowgill, Jr., who died in 1990 and her twin brother, Donald A. Ritchie.
She is survived by her sons, William Andrew Cowgill and his wife Francesca “Jo” of Schaumburg, IL and David James Cowgill and his wife Linda Marie of Clayton, DE; sisters, Eleanor Kilburn of Newark, DE, Esther Neeley of Bath, PA, and Kathleen Kaiser of Swarthmore, PA; sister-in-law, Miriam Ritchie; two grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 am on Friday, August 10, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church of Newark, 292 W. Main Street, Newark, DE 19711.
