Edwin D. Clinton, age 92, of Crofton, MD, formerly of New Castle and Dover, DE, passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011.
A native Delawarean, Edwin was born in Wilmington in October 13, 1919, son of the late Russell Melvin Clinton and Helen Sentman Clinton. He proudly served his country in the US Army during World War II and, following the war, would continue his military career in the US Army Reserve. He was recalled to active duty as an intelligence officer during the Korean War and served as a Chief Warrant Officer for the Army National Guard at the New Castle airbase until his retirement. A gifted athlete, Edwin boxed under the name “Triphammer” in many exhibitions while in military service.
He married his beloved wife, Ruth Kramer Clinton, in 1949, and the couple moved to New Castle where they made their home for the next 55 years. A founding member of Asbury United Methodist Church (he and Ruth were the first couple to be married in the original Wilmington Manor church by Rev. Brooks Reynolds), he sang as a tenor in the choir and was a popular youth leader for many years. Among his many hobbies, Edwin excelled in marksmanship competitions, winning championships at the national level. He also enjoyed gardening and fishing in his boat on the Indian River Bay. He met Ruth while roller skating at the Elsmere Roller Rink.
Ruth passed away in 2006 after 57 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Valerie Maxwell (Jim), George Clinton, and Susan Clinton; brother, James Clinton (Eileen); granddaughters, Jennnifer Delgado (Rafael), Jennifer Comparoto (Emilio), and Amy Thompson (Steve); seven great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, October 27, 2011 at the Asbury United Methodist Church, 300 E. Basin Road, New Castle, DE, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
