Mr. Edwin Joseph Hicks, Jr., age 79, of Lewes, DE, passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2012.
Ed was born in Philadelphia, PA on May 10, 1932 to the late Edwin J. Hicks, Sr. and Elizabeth Bryan Hicks. Educated at La Salle High School and College, Ed went on to make his career in the US Air Force, attained the rank of Chief Master Sergeant, and retired after 39 years of dedicated service. Ed and his beloved wife, Jane, enjoyed 52 years of marriage.
Above all else, Ed was a gentleman. A compassionate person with a generous spirit, he was happy to help anyone whenever he could. His love for his family, his church, and his country was central to his life.
He is survived by wife, Jane Hicks; children, Jo Anne Werszner, and husband, Scott, of Williamsburg, VA, Edwin J. Hicks, III, and wife, Dorothy, of Turnersville, NJ, Carl J. Hicks, and wife, Tracy, of Harrington, DE; brother, Joseph B. Hicks of Fenwick Island, DE; sisters, Margaret Lagan of Harleysville, PA, Elizabeth Oesterreicher, and husband, John, of Rio Vista, CA, and Mary Louise Stevens of Hatfield, PA; grandchildren, Peter S. and Brian M. Werszner and Edwin J., IV and Ryan D. Hicks.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:45 am on Tuesday, February 21, 2012, at St. Margaret of Scotland R.C. Church, 2431 Frazer Road, Newark, DE. Friends and family may call at the church from 10:30 am until 11:30 am. Interment will follow in the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Ed’s name be made to the Helen F. Graham Cancer Center, in care of Christiana Care, P.O. Box 1668, Wilmington, DE 19899 or to Home of the Brave, 6632 Sharps Road, Milford, DE 19963.
