Mrs. Elizabeth May Lewis, known fondly as “Betty,” age 80, of Middletown, DE, formerly of New Castle, passed away on Sunday, January 22, 2012.
Betty was a native Delawarean, born in Wilmington on May 26, 1931, daughter of the late Joseph C. Woerner and Elizabeth C. Kiefer Woerner. She was a longtime member of Our Lady of Fatima parish and of the Howard J. Weston Senior Center in Manor Park, where she greatly enjoyed playing bingo with friends.
A talented homemaker, devoted wife, and loving mother and grandmother, Betty dedicated her life to caring for her beloved family. Her happiest times were spent in the company of her children and grandchildren, especially during family beach vacations at Shawn’s Hideaway in Lewes.
In her leisure hours, Betty enjoyed crocheting lovely blankets and other items as special presents for family and friends.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Joseph Woerner and Robert Woerner. She is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Harry E. Lewis, Sr.; children, Margaret M. Eckrich (George) of Newark, Harry E. Lewis, Jr. (Carol), Frederick John Lewis III (Joyce), Sherry L. Akin (Michael), and Elizabeth M. Noel (Todd), all of Middletown; sister, Margaret Riley of Bear; brothers, Charles Woerner of Newark and Francis Woerner of Bear; 14 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; and 5 great great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 om on Wednesday, January 25, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Thursday, January 26, 2012, at Our Lady of Fatima R.C. Church, 801 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. Interment will follow in Silverbrook Cemetery, Lancaster Ave. and DuPont Rd., Wilmington.
