Elizabeth R. Cole

Born: 1/27/1923
Died: 4/9/2013

Elizabeth R. Cole, age 90, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully at Wilmington Hospital on Tuesday, April 9, 2013.
Betty was born in Wilmington, DE, on January 27, 1923, daughter of the late Carson F. and Elizabeth C. Roselle. She was a graduate of the Class of 1941 at Conrad High School, where she was an honor student and graduated second in her class. She was also the DAR State Representative in her senior year. After graduation, she worked briefly for New England Life Insurance Company before she married her childhood sweetheart, William Floyd Cole, with whom she would have shared 70 years of marriage in June of this year. Upon her marriage she became a homemaker and also later worked with Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home for many years as a hairdresser.
Betty was an avid bowler in her younger years and enjoyed ceramics and painting. Some of her paintings are still displayed in shops around Wilmington. Active in her community, she was a member of Asbury Methodist Church and the Howard Weston Senior Center. She greatly enjoyed many years of traveling and playing cards with her friends at the center. Betty also looked forward to the fun of visiting with old friends at Conrad High School class reunion luncheons.
Her greatest accomplishment in life was being such a wonderful, giving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who was very active with her family. She is survived by her husband, William Floyd Cole, Sr.; her son, William F. Cole, Jr. (Sue) of St. Cloud, FL; her daughter, Vicki C. Alford (George) of New Castle, DE; her three granddaughters, Andra-Leigh Sutherland of Henderson, NV; Melanie Barbas (Michael) of New Castle, DE; and Lesley Mellinger (Jason) of New Castle, DE; and a grandson, Joseph McNaughton (Michelle) of Texas. She is also survived by her cherished great grandchildren, with whom she had the privilege of spending many special hours and who will always lovingly remember their Grand-Nanny: Landri, Cole, and Lindzi Sutherland, Hannah and Sam Barbas, Ava and Grayson Mellinger, and Ashleigh McNaughton. She is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her brother, Carson F. Roselle, Jr., and her sister, Adeline Heller.
The family wishes to extend their thanks to the staff of Gilpin Hall, who so lovingly took care of our wife, mother, and grandmother.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Sunday, April 14, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 10 am on Monday, April 15, 2013, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Gilpin Hall, 1101 Gilpin Avenue, Wilmington, DE 19806; or to the Howard Weston Senior Center, 1 Bassett Avenue, New Castle, DE 19720.
