Mr. Ellsworth W. Lynn II, age 90, of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2012.
Born in Scranton, PA, on December 28, 1921, Mr. Lynn was the son of the late John T. Lynn and Sara Pero Lynn. He graduated from Kingston (PA) High School in 1941 and proudly served his country in the US Coast Guard during World War II. In civilian life, he would go on to a career with the DuPont Company, where he retired as a fire safety specialist at the Chestnut Run site.
Dedicated to the mission of community fire safety and prevention throughout his life, Mr. Lynn began his career as a volunteer firefighter with the Forty Fort (PA) Fire Department in 1950. He would later join the Cranston Heights Fire Company in 1959 and the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company in 1983. During his career as a firefighter, he was active with many fire service organizations, including the Delaware Valley Fire Chiefs Association, which awarded him the title of Financial Secretary Emeritus in 1975 and presented him with the Distinguished Service Award in 1997. He was also honored with both the New Castle County Fire Chiefs Association Award and the New Castle County Volunteer Firefighters Association Proclamation in 1998 and with the Chief’s Award from the Aetna Hose, Hook & Ladder Company in 2001. Mr. Lynn generously shared his fire service expertise in the training of young firefighters as a Lifetime Instructor with the Delaware State Fire School. It has been estimated that he taught more than 10,000 firefighters and EMTs.
A very creative thinker, Mr. Lynn was widely admired for his talents as a painter and artist. In 1986, he created the winning design in the Newark Senior Center’s new logo competition and was awarded lifetime membership to the center. He also maintained an interesting and varied collection of vintage fire truck models and was a longtime member of the Hagley Museum Model Railroaders. In earlier years, he greatly enjoyed boating.
Most of all, Mr. Lynn will be remembered as a devoted family man who took great pride in providing for his wife and children. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, he was always at his happiest when in the company of his family.
