Erik Jefferson Schaumann, age 76, died peacefully at home on Saturday, September 3, 2011.
Erik, the son of Holger and Lavinia Moss Schaumann, was born on February 18, 1935 in Wilmington, DE, and grew up in Newark. He graduated from Newark High School in 1952, from the University of Delaware with a degree in chemical engineering in 1956, and also received a master’s degree from Columbia University in 1957. He worked for the DuPont Company until his retirement in 1997.
Erik loved gardening, woodworking, opera, baroque and bluegrass music. He was an avid reader and enjoyed his daily walks. He was a member of Limestone Presbyterian Church where he served as a trustee, a deacon, and on the Building and Grounds Committee. He and his wife have served in the leadership of Presbyterian Marriage Encounter. Erik belonged to the Pike Creek Lions Club for many years. Since his retirement, he has been a volunteer at Meeting Ground serving as a handyman at their women’s shelter.
Erik was predeceased by his brother, Carl, and his son, Mark. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Annette Ely Schaumann; his granddaughter Sheri (the daughter of his son Mark), her husband Michael Dodson, and their son Michael Dodson, Jr.; his son Paul, his wife Vorice, and son Paul, Jr.; his daughter Lisa, her husband Chris Rogers, and children Wilson, Erika and Perry; his son Carl, his wife Beth Renzulli, and children Cleo and Leif; his sister Karen; his brother Kai and his wife Kanya; and many nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Erik’s life will be held at Limestone Presbyterian Church, 3201 Limestone Rd., Wilmington (directions at www.limestonepresbyterian.org/map.htm), on Friday, September 9, 2011, at 1 pm, where visitation will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow the service at Head of Christiana Cemetery, Nottingham Rd., Newark, followed by a reception at Limestone Presbyterian Church.
