Ernest Gene Ferrero, age 67, of Newark, DE, died peacefully at home on Thursday, July 25, 2013.
Ernie was born in Pittsburgh, PA, on May 26, 1946, the son of Frank J. and Rose Mai Ferrero. After graduating from California State College in 1969 with a degree in elementary education, he taught his first two years in Weirton, WV. He earned his master’s degree in education administration from West Virginia University. In 1971, he came east to Newark to teach for the next 34 years in the former Newark and later Christina School District. Over the years he taught grades two through five in three schools: Brookside, Bancroft, and West Park. Ernie enjoyed teaching at the elementary level, making many friends over the years amongst his colleagues. He retired in 2005, continuing to substitute and volunteer his time at West Park.
Ernie always enjoyed social occasions with friends and family. He loved traveling with his family and watching his sons play sports. Above all, he had a great sense of humor and loved to laugh. He was a collector of many things and, of course, loved a good deal.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Frank. He is survived by his wife Mary Kay (“Katy”), son Michael and his wife Lindsey, son Eric (“Rick”), brothers Joseph and Alfred, and grandson Benjamin.
Burial will be held privately.
