Ernest N. Scarborough, age 89, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, November 9, 2011.
Born in Annapolis, MD, on May 21, 1922, Dr. Scarborough was the son of the late Dr. James Blaine Scarborough and Lessie Neville Scarborough. He proudly served his country as a captain in the US Army Air Corps during World War II and would go on to attend the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Iowa State University.
A gifted educator and researcher, Dr. Scarborough began his teaching career in Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University. He accepted a professorship at the University of Delaware in Newark, where he taught from 1955 until his retirement in 1983.
During his tenure at UD, Dr. Scarborough was honored with a National Teacher of the Year Award and, in 1964, with the Christian R. and Mary H. Lindbach Excellence in Teaching Award. For many years, he served as the chairman of the Department of Agricultural Engineering (Bioresources Engineering) and, upon his retirement, was awarded the title Professor Emeritus. Among his many professional affiliations, Dr. Scarborough was invited by his peers to the membership of Who’s Who in the East, American Men of Science, Who’s Who In Technology, and Outstanding Educators of America.
Dr. Scarborough greatly enjoyed gardening around his home and traveling with his wife and family. He was also an avid sports fan throughout his life.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Miriam Jacklitch Scarborough; children, James Scarborough (Carol) of Earleville, MD, Barbara Scarborough of Greensboro, NC, Betsy Kenyon (Austin) of Park Hill, OK, and Robert Scarborough (Judith) of Newark, DE; brother, William Scarborough (Pat) of Hattiesburg, MS; and grandchildren, Michael, Rebecca, Nikki, and Tyler. He was preceded in death by a brother, James B. Scarborough, Jr., and a sister, Lucille S. Richardson.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 12, 2011, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Interment will be held privately at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to the Ernest N. Scarborough Scholarship Fund, University of Delaware, University Development Office, George Evans House, 5 Main St., Newark, DE 19716; or to Compassionate Care Hospice, 702 B Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE 19805.
