Mr. Francis Thomas Ward, age 82, of Delaware City, DE, passed away on Tuesday, April 3, 2012.
Born in Chester, PA, on November 19, 1929, Fran was the son of the late Peter Ward and Maria Quinn Ward. He made his career as a chemical operator with Sun Oil in Marcus Hook, where he retired after 47 years.
Fran was a devoted Irish Catholic from Resurrection Parish, a graduate of St. James High School in Chester, a Man of Malvern, and a founding member of St. John Fisher Parish in Boothwyn.
He was an outstanding baseball player, who played in the Cleveland Indians minor league system. Locally, he was a seven-time all-star in the DELCO and DELCO Valley leagues, where he was also a two-time MVP and won several batting titles. He was inducted into the Media Hall of Fame.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Vivian Carson Ward, with whom he would have celebrated 55 years of marriage on August 31st; children, Francis C. Ward (Michelle) of Bear, DE, Constance W. Davis (Michael) of New Castle, DE, Gerald T. Ward (fiancée, Lynn Mecler) of Clayton, DE, and Patrice J. Ward of Harbeson, DE; brother, James Ward of Ridley Park, PA; 9 grandchildren; a great granddaughter; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10:30 am on Tuesday, April 10, 2012, at St. Paul’s R.C. Church, 209 Washington Street, Delaware City, DE, where visitation will begin at 9:30 am. Interment will follow in New St. Paul’s Cemetery, Delaware City, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Fran may be made to St. Paul’s R.C. Church, P.O. Box 544, Delaware City, DE 19706.
