Mr. Fred C. Eichelberger, age 77, of Wilmington, DE, passed away after a long illness on Friday, March 9, 2012, at the Masonic Home of Delaware.
A native Delawarean, Fred was born in Wilmington on March 6, 1935, son of German immigrants, the late Frederick L. Eichelberger and Lena Schmid Eichelberger. He proudly served his country for four years in the US Air Force. In civilian life, he made his career with the US Postal Service, serving for 30 years as a window clerk and 10 years as an information officer until his retirement in 1992.
Active in the Masonic order for over 50 years, Fred was a member of Lafayette Lodge #14 AF & AM, the Nur Temple Shrine (48 years), and the Delaware Consistory. He was also a member of IOOF Eden Lodge.
In his leisure hours, Fred greatly enjoyed collecting model trains and taking train trips. He also maintained a large and impressive stamp collection.
He is survived by his beloved longtime companion, Sally Straughn; three cousins in Stuttgart, Germany; and many good friends.
Visitation will be held beginning at 10 am on Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. A Masonic service will begin at 11 am, with a funeral service following. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, 33rd and Market Streets, Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children, Attn: Development Office, 3551 North Broad St., Philadelphia, PA 19140.
