Mr. Frederick G. West, Jr., age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.
Born in Butler, PA, on August 5, 1924, Mr. West was the son of the late Frederick G. West, Sr. and Mary Schneider West. He proudly served his country as a career member of the US Coast Guard and was a US Army veteran of World War II, during which he bravely contributed to victory in both the European and Pacific campaigns. Following his retirement from the military after 20 years, he began a second career spanning 20 years working on oil tankers for Exxon Mobil.
An avid sports fan throughout his life, Mr. West looked forward to cheering each season for his favorite University of Delaware squads and for the Philadelphia Phillies. He was a seasoned and knowledgeable world traveler and delighted especially in taking many interesting cruises with his wife over the years. He was a wonderful storyteller, as well, who always captivated his audiences with his wit, charm, and gift for detail. He also enjoyed listening to jazz music and riding rollercoasters.
A loving and devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Mr. West is survived by his wife of 49 years, Luella Keiner West; children, Frederick G. West III (Donna) of Newark, MaryLou Nye (Joe) of Bear, and Barbara Parag (Don) of Wilmington; stepdaughters, Beth Zaborny of Nashville, TN, and Carol Gilbert of Seattle, WA; grandchildren, Jackson Nye, Sierra Nye, F. Grant West IV, and Margot West; siblings, William West and John West, both of Butler, PA, Michael West of Massachusetts, and Winifred Ford, Patricia Jacob, and Nancy O’Brien, all of Florida. Mr. West was one of 14 children and was preceded in death by seven other siblings.
A funeral service will be held at 12:30 pm on Thursday, March 22, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin 10:30 am. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear, DE.
