June 21, 1942 - April 4, 2023

George Wayne Clayton, age 80, of Bear, DE, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Tuesday, April 4, 2023.

Born in Wilmington, DE on June 21, 1942, he was a son of the late Robert Walter and Esther (Green) Clayton. George was a graduate of P.S. DuPont High School with the class of 1961. He worked as the supervisor of shipping at Speakman Company for 34 years until his retirement.

George was an avid sports fan, spending countless hours cheering on his favorite teams, the Philadelphia Eagles and Phillies, and watching WNBA games. He also loved Wilmington University Volleyball and attended as many games as he could. George was a dedicated member of Ogletown Baptist Church and Grand Strand Baptist Church in Myrtle Beach, SC and loved to share his faith in Jesus with others. He is now walking in Heaven with Jesus.

In addition to his parents, George was preceded in death by his brother, Bob Clayton. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Beverly (Croes) Clayton; niece, Becky Kendall; sisters, Carol Clayton and Sandi Richardson; nephew, Steven Schmeusser; 3 great nephews; 3 great nieces; and brother-in-law, Lloyd Schmeusser.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Lori Randla, their guardian angel.

A funeral service will begin at 11 am on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE. Interment will be held privately.

  • My condolences and sympathy to Bev after reading about George’s death I have many fond memories of our days in West Bay Park including seeing George climb the tower in the snow at Indian River Inlet just for a good picture He was a wonderful, funny man who will surely be missed by all who knew him
