Gwendolyn Mary Pierce Roman, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully at Christiana Hospital on Sunday, May 19, 2013, surrounded by her family.
Born in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Gwen moved to New York City with her family and became a US citizen in 1939. She graduated from All Saints Girls Academy in New York City and the University of Delaware. In addition, she attended LaValle Université in Quebec City, Canada.
Gwen worked as a secretary in the chemistry department of the University of Delaware for many years. She was a former member of Holy Family parish and a longtime member of Resurrection Parish in Newark, where she attended daily mass.
Gwen was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Vivian Henrion, sisters, Frances Foraker and Joan Power, first husband, Dallas Pierce of Milford in 1960, second husband, Paul L. Roman of Newark in 2009, and daughter, Lynn LaFrance in 2004. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Sharon and Joseph McNesby, Jr.; grandchildren, Kate McNesby (Tom Adams), Joseph “Andy” McNesby (Jennifer), Erin Nowicki (Mark), Theresa Martin (Justin), and Josh, Matthew, and Rachael Helman; great grandchildren, Morgan and Joey McNesby, and Finnegan Martin; sister, Dorothy Henrion of Fort White, FL; brother-in-law, Clifford Pierce of Milford; and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank friends (especially Gwen’s neighbor Fred), extended family members, and the staff of Churchman Village for their help and care. Special thanks also to the doctors and nurses of Christiana Care Emergency Room and 3E ICU for providing compassionate care and support in her final hours.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11 am on Thursday, May 23rd, at Resurrection R.C. Church, 3000 Videre Drive, Skyline Ridge, Wilmington, where visitation will begin at 9:30 am. A committal service will be held at 10 am on Friday, May 24th, at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
