Helen J. Keeley

June 22, 1934 - June 7, 2021

Helen J. Keeley, age 86, of Landenberg, PA, passed away peacefully with her loving daughter by her side on Monday, June 7, 2021.

Born in Glasgow, DE, on June 22, 1934, she was a daughter of the late Earl E. and Laura J. (Smith) Leasure. As a child, she attended a one room school house. One of Helen’s favorite childhood memories was being in the 4-H Club and all of the experiences it had to offer. After graduating from Newark High School, she worked in an administrative position.

Helen met the love of her life, Howard Keeley, and together they raised three children. In the late 70s, she pursued her degree in nursing at Chester County School of Practical Nursing. Helen went on to work for Pocopson Home where she enjoyed working for over 17 years. She retired with a great sense of pride and accomplishment knowing her services were greatly appreciated.

Helen enjoyed maintaining her home and yard. Many remember her as being a farm girl at heart because of her love for canning and cooking.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her loving husband of 53 years, Howard F. Keeley; children, Douglas Michael Keeley and Cynthia Marie Shue; and siblings, Earl Leasure, Jr., Sylvia Patterson, and Kathryn Phillips. She is survived by her daughter, Lora Ann Keeley; sisters, Ruth Ann Eastburn and Sandy Hufnal; and many nieces and nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10:00 am until 11:00 am on Thursday, June 17, 2021, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will be held at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery. Face coverings will be required for all those in attendance not immunized with the COVID-19 vaccine per the CDC and Governor of Delaware.

I commend you for all the time you spent taking care of her and putting her first in your life. That’s a true loving bond between a Mother and her Daughter. Know that if you need anything all you need do is call. Love you, Cousin Tanya

Our whole family remembers Helen as a good neighbor who reached out to us many times during her life with interest in what we were doing, with sweet gifts to our little ones, and her kindness in caring for Lily our beautiful angora Cat as she aged. We especially think of her surprise visits during Christmas celebrations and remember you and your Mom with fondness. Sending you Hugs and Peace, Nancy, Mary,& All

  • Helen was like a mother to me. I will miss my big sister terribly!!

  • Lora, so sorry for the loss of your mom. Helen always talked to us Schaen kids as if we were adults. I always appreciated that. She asked our opinion on things as if what we had to say was important. ( As kids we always thought what we had to say mattered, even when it didn’t)😏 I always think of Helen as being one with nature. She appreciated butterflies in the garden, birds and cats in the yard. I know every time you pick a flower you will remember your mom. If you find yourself needing family company, Ev and I are ready to hang out with you. (RememderHills is right around the corner.) God bless you , your cousin Elaine.
