Herman F. Slack

Mr. Herman Francis Slack, age 87, of Kenton, DE, formerly of Bear, New Castle, and Claymont, passed away on Saturday, June 15, 2013, at his home.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Slack was born in Newport on January 15, 1926, son of the late Thomas C. Slack and Clara Couden Slack. He proudly served in the US Army during World War II as an infantryman in General Patton’s famed Third Army and earned a Purple Heart for injuries sustained in the service of his country. In civilian life, he made his career as a bookkeeper with Boyd’s Florist. He later accepted a position in private security.
Mr. Slack was a devout Christian and a longtime member of Concord Baptist Church on Marsh Road. He later attended Faith Baptist Church in Smyrna. A gifted athlete and avid sports fan throughout his life, he enjoyed exercising at the Kirkwood Fitness Club for many years.
His beloved wife, Ruby Hughes Slack, passed away in 1962. He is survived by his children, Karen J. Slack, Brent D. Slack (Mabel), Pamela E. Slack, and Miles Slack (Lisa); grandchildren, April, Brent, Scott, Fallon, and Madison; and twelve great grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held at 2 pm on Thursday, June 20th, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 1 pm. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
