Horace R. “Ray” Wooters

Horace R. “Ray” Wooters, age 88, of Newark, DE, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2020.

Born on August 9, 1932 in Wilmington, DE, he was a son of the late Edwin Willard Wooters Sr. and Rose Marie (Ziegler) Reno. Ray served in the U.S. Air Force for 4 years during the Korean War. He received the Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the United Nations Service Medal. Ray retired from the U.S. Postal Service, where he started as a distribution clerk, advanced to personal assistant, foreman of mails and tour superintendent of mails. He then moved to eastern region headquarters to an industrial engineering position. Ray ended his postal career at national headquarters as a postal operations analyst. During his 31-year postal career, he received several citations, including Letter of Commendation and special achievement awards. Ray enjoyed spending time with his family especially with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He loved the family gatherings at his home and at his pool. In his leisure time, Ray enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching “The Voice” and football games (GO EAGLES), listening to music, golfing, cooking, camping and traveling with his wife and family. His favorite places to travel were to Arizona and Myrtle Beach with his wife. Ray was known for his big heart, great memories from his past and his beautiful hair. He will be especially remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

In addition to his parents, Ray was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Mazie Wooters; daughter, Rena Childers; daughter-in-law, Beverly Wooters; siblings, Elaine Wooters, Marguerite Smallwood, Edwin Wooters Jr., and Mildred Ann Murphy; and granddaughter, Kimberly Morris. He is survived by his children, Phillip L. Vavala, Raymond H. Wooters (Erica), and Susan M. Wooters (Dean); sisters, Doris Reno, and Rose Marie Sontowski; 7 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and 4 great great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in Ray’s memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market St., Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106 or to the Delaware Kidney Fund, 1100 Lovering Ave., Ste. 10-B, Wilmington, DE 19806.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 12 pm until 1 pm on Thursday, December 10, 2020, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 1 pm. Face masks will be required for all in attendance. Interment will be held privately at Gracelawn Memorial Park.

  • I loved you and your whole family I cherish all memories and great times your drove to drive in move theaters and me Rena would fall asleep I waved and beeped hot. Last time saw you and you save your wave your hand and smiled I sure you didn’t no who I was but I k ew you love you will be forever missed

  • I am very heart stricken to hear Uncle Ray had past. It hurts that I am not living up north to be with family. Mom always talked about Uncle Ray and what a great brother he was to her. As a kid, I remember going to his house and swimming in his pool. My heart and prayers go out to you all. Love Always!
