Howard W. Vanover

Mr. Howard W. Vanover, age 84, of New Castle, DE, passed away following a short, but hard-fought battle with heart complications on Friday, September 9, 2011, at Christiana Hospital.
Born in Ashe County, NC, on February 3, 1927, Mr. Vanover was the son of the late Walter M. Vanover, Sr. and Gladys Sawyer Vanover. He was employed as a foreman with New Castle Roof and Waterproofing and as the shop steward at the Continental Can Company. A brilliant craftsman, he worked a total of 36 years in and out of the construction industry before retiring in 1988.
Mr. Vanover was an avid outdoorsman and greatly enjoyed both hunting and fishing. Well known throughout his life for his compassionate nature and good heart, he often went out of his way to help anyone in need.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Elizabeth Ann “Liz” Berry Vanover, in 2003, and by his brothers, Walter Vanover, Jr. and William Vanover. He is survived by his sons, Shaun W. Vanover of New Castle, Michael H. Layton, and Stephen H. Vanover of Centerville, MD.
A memorial service will be held at 6 pm on Saturday, September 17, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, 19720, where visitation will begin at 4 pm.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to assist the family with funeral expenses may be made to Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home at the address above.
