James I. Sturgeon, Sr.

Mr. James I. Sturgeon, Sr., age 75, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Wednesday, March 14, 2012.
Mr. Sturgeon was born in Wilmington on September 24, 1936, son of the late James Sturgeon and Emma Miller Sturgeon. A standout athlete from his youth, he starred on many of his high school squads–including varsity baseball and basketball–and was honored to be named to several All-State teams.
He would go on to make his career as a professional truck driver, retiring from the State of Delaware after 35 years of service.
A devoted family man and loving husband and father, Mr. Sturgeon delighted in spending time with his beloved wife and children. He especially enjoyed attending his grandchildren’s sporting events and offering them his gentle support, encouragement, and advice. He will also be long and fondly remembered for his wonderful sense of humor.
He is survived by his wife, Judith Silver Sturgeon; children, James I. Sturgeon, Jr. (Kathy) of Coatesville, PA, Scott D. Sturgeon of Wilmington, Nancy L. Rohrer (Harry) of New Castle, Terry L. Cole of Bear, and Leslie A. Ridgway (William) of Elkton, MD; siblings, Connie Sturgeon (Helen), Camilla Craig (Frank), Billie S. Sturgeon, Stephen Sturgeon, and Bruce Sturgeon (Kathy); grandchildren, Dustin Flowers, Lauryn Shelby, Stephanie Sturgeon, Shawn Rohrer, and Marc Rohrer; and eight great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Richard and Harry Sturgeon, and sisters, Sandra D’Andrea and Emma Pottios.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Monday, March 19, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Sturgeon may be made to Five Points Fire Company, 209 S. Maryland Ave., Wilmington DE, 19804. Mark donations “for Ambulance Fund.”
