James Stephens Linderman

April 1, 1930 - October 7, 2024

On October 7, 2024, James Stephens Linderman passed away peacefully at Chester County Pocopson Home. A loving, honest, and generous man, Jim will live forever in the hearts of his many family members and friends.

Born on April 1, 1930, Jim grew up in Town Line and Buffalo, NY. He graduated from Bennett High School in 1947, attending Washington & Jefferson College before transferring to the University of Michigan, graduating in 1953 with a degree in electrical engineering. He joined Bell Aircraft in 1953, responsible for the design of major subsystems for the Regulus missile. Jim went to Navy Officer Candidate School in January 1955; worked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a ship superintendent in electronics until 1958; and retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 1982 as a Commander.

Jim joined the DuPont Engineering Research Laboratory in 1958 as a research engineer. He was subsequently promoted and worked in the Engineering Development Laboratory as a manager for Photo Products, receiving three patents. In 1968, he transferred to Textile Fibers, moving to Old Hickory, TN (1968); Kinston, NC (1972); and Richmond, VA (1973). In 1975, Jim and his family moved back to Wilmington, DE where he became the engineering manager for the Medical Products, Diagnostic and Bioresearch Division heading new product development for aca®, Analyst™, and Sorvall®. He rounded out his career as the development manager for Ambulatory Diagnostics and Biotechnology Systems and retired in 1991 after 33 years of service.

Jim’s retirement was filled with numerous projects ranging from woodworking and wiring to playing with his Lionel O-gauge trains and fixing numerous tractors. He volunteered extensively for Sts. Andrew and Matthew Episcopal Church (SsAM) and other organizations. He loved to travel, often to visit relatives in Germany and work on genealogy. He was an avid, sharp, and quietly competitive bridge player. His other passion was watching his Michigan Wolverines dominate in football.

He was married to the Rev. Jeanne Herron Linderman for 57 years prior to her passing in 2012. He is survived by his six children and their spouses: Susan Hayes (Dan), John Linderman (Mary), Richard Linderman (Linnea), Craig Linderman (Lana), Mark Linderman (Jennifer Geiger), and Elizabeth Colagiuri (Charles). He took great joy in convening his large family each year for Camp Linderman and was incredibly proud of his 17 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren (with two more due in early November). He is also survived by his brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Sue Linderman, and his niece and nephews. He shared eight years of companionship with Janice Anderson, a friend from elementary school, following Jeanne’s death.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. on Friday, October 25, 2024, at the Episcopal Church of Saints Andrew and Matthew, 719 N. Shipley Street, Wilmington, DE, 19801, where a funeral service will begin at 7:30 p.m. A graveside service will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 26, 2024, in Old St. Anne’s Cemetery, 105 St. Annes Church Road, Middletown, DE

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim’s memory to SsAM, at the address listed above or online by clicking here; or to Friendship House, P.O. Box 1517, Wilmington, DE 19899 or online by clicking here.
