James W. Mitchell, Jr.

Born April 7, 1943

James W. Mitchell, Jr., age 74, of Marshallton, DE, passed away peacefully while surrounded by his family, on Friday, October 20, 2017.

A native Delawarean, James was born in Wilmington on April 7, 1943, and was the son of the late James W. Mitchell, Sr. and Maybelle (Berger) Mitchell. He proudly served his country as a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. A 35-year employee of CSX, James made his career as a carman inspector.

An avid outdoorsman, he was actively involved in the sled dog racing community, participating in a number of parades with his team. James was an RV enthusiast, who visited 47 states throughout his travels. He loved all things Western-inspired, especially horses and cowboys, and fondly remembered his trip to Montana where he spent time on a dude ranch. James possessed a vast collection of model trains which he built and acquired over the years. Most of all, he looked forward to spending time with his family, whom he adored.

Mitchell; children, John Mitchell (Lisa) of Middletown, Peggy Gardener of Marshallton, and Daniel Mitchell (Bernadette) of Marshallton; sisters, Mary Ann Mitchell Badger of Landenberg, PA and Helen Moore (Tom Smith) of New Castle; 7 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 6 pm until 7 pm on Thursday evening, October 26, 2017, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 7 pm. Interment will be private.
