Jane G. Brereton

Jane G. Brereton, age 97, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Saturday, March 14, 2026.
Born in Philadelphia, PA on February 3, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Wilbur and Fannie (Knowlton) Geyer. She was a devoted wife to the late Robert “Bob” Brereton and a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family.
Jane graduated from the Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing of Philadelphia in 1950 and made a career for herself in nursing. She started as a visiting nurse in the Philadelphia area. After marrying Bob, they moved to New Castle, Delaware and she worked as a supervisor at the Delaware State Hospital. Upon retirement, Jane volunteered for the Suicide Hotline of Delaware and Meals on Wheels.
Besides nursing, Jane loved the beach and boating on the Delaware and Elk Rivers and the Chesapeake Bay. She and Bob joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary and were members for 35 years. Together they taught safe boating classes, conducted inspections and helped stranded boaters whenever possible.
She loved tending to her flower and vegetable gardens and would can her own tomato sauce.
Jane was a devoted member of the Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green in Old New Castle since approximately 1955 where she served on the Altar Guild.
In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Brereton; sister, Ellyn McKeever; son-in-law, Joseph Miller; and grandson, Jason Miller. She is survived by her children, Marshal H. Brereton (Susan), Sara B. Miller, Andrew T. Brereton (Carrie), and John F. Brereton (Kathryn); 7 grandchildren; and 6 great-grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Monday, March 23, 2026, at Immanuel Episcopal Church on the Green, 50 Market Street, New Castle, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 11 am. Inurnment will follow at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

Mom kept an orderly house (despite the disorder we sometimes brought 😁). But one thing that was always known, and bestowed onto us children, that all were welcome. She was by nature a very giving person and a nurse by nature, not just profession.
