February 26, 1933 - August 17, 2022

Joan L. Coffin, age 89, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at her home after a brief illness.

Born in Wilmington, DE on February 26, 1933, she was a daughter of the late Wilburt T. and Anna L. Outten. She graduated from A.I. DuPont High School and attended Goldey-Beacom College.

Joan worked at John G. Leach School and also worked many years in the explosives department of the DuPont Company. She was an active member of Hope Evangelical Lutheran Church since 1959.

A gentle soul, Joan loved cooking, baking, crossword puzzles and listening to and watching Phillies games. Above all, she loved God and her family and friends. All who knew her will miss her sweet, loving smile.

In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her husband, Donald J. Coffin, Sr. She is survived by her loving son, Donald J. Coffin, Jr.; daughter-in-law, Bonnie L. Coffin; grandsons, Jacob T. Coffin, and Tyler A. Coffin (Melissa); sister, Shirley McCabe; sister-in-law, Mary Frances Luzier; 6 nieces; and 3 nephews.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Saturday, August 20, 2022, at Hope Lutheran Church, 230 Christiana Road, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will be in Gracelawn Memorial Park at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Joan’s memory may be made to Hope Lutheran Church at the address listed above.

  • To Donnie, Shirley, Jacob, Tyler & Melissa, Joan was a good friend to me for 50 years of my life and I will miss her so much.
    She & Elaine Beck started the Sarah Circle, WELCA, in 1972 right after I joined Hope Lutheran Church, of which I was a member. Joan had a laugh that I will never forget. Her spiritual guidance enhanced my faith in God. May she rest in peace with both her heavenly father, Jesus Christ and also her husband Donald, Sr. I will be keeping all of her family and friends in my prayers, as we grieve her loss. Love, Phyllis

  • When Richard and I first started going to Hope, he was the interm pastor. I knew very few people. Joan and Martha Shipe sat in front of me. Joan always had a smile for me and soon, a hug was added to that beautiful smile. Kindness and love were in her DNA. Donnie, I know you will miss her terribly but what beautiful memories you have to look back on!
