John Patrick Murphy

John P. Murphy, age 87, of Newark, DE, died on Monday, March 12, 2012, peacefully at home with his family surrounding him.
He was born and raised in New York City. He was a graduate of Stuyvesant High School and received a Bachelor of Mechanical Engineering degree from Pratt Institute, Brooklyn, NY.
John served in the US Navy during World War II aboard the USS Chincoteague in the Pacific Theatre.
He relocated to Delaware in 1952 and worked in the DuPont Company Engineering Department for 33 years, retiring as a project manager in 1985.
His wife of 40 years, Eileen, predeceased him in 1991. He is survived by two sons, Brian D. (Cindy) of Fair Hill, MD, and Dr. Chistopher J. (Karen) of Newark, DE; and four daughters, Jean M. Schnee (Steve) of Bozeman, MT, Audrey J. Burt (Steve) of Roanoke, VA, Maureen T. Shackelford (Lee) of Annapolis, MD, and Ellen J. Price (Rob) of Louisville, KY. He is also survived by a sister, Ellen Scallion (Richard) of Candlewood Isle, CT; 18 grandchildren; and 3 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held from 5 pm to 7 pm on Friday, March 16, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 10 am on Saturday, March 17, 2012, at Holy Angels R.C. Church, 82 Possum Park Road, Newark, DE. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Covenant House, Times Square Station, P.O. Box 731, New York, NY 10108-0900; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
