Mr. John R. Crompton, age 79, of Middletown, DE, formerly of St. Georges, passed away on Monday, December 10, 2012.
Born in St. Georges on October 14, 1933, John was the son of the late William B. Crompton and Kathryn R. Roberts Crompton. He attended Conrad High School for two years before graduating from Delaware City High School in 1951. He married his high school sweetheart, the former Shirley A. Baker, in 1953.
After proudly serving his country for four years with the US Air Force, John began a 34-year career with the DuPont Company in Pioneering Research. He retired as a personnel supervisor at the company’s Experimental Station site in Wilmington.
Active in his community, John was a member of the St. Georges Presbyterian Church, the Delaware City Presbyterian Church, and the St. Georges Cemetery Company, for which he served as secretary. He was a 35-year member of the Delaware City Lions Club, where he held every club office over the years. He also served a term as the Lions Club District Governor.
John enjoyed a variety of hobbies, including woodworking and carving, golfing, and solving challenging crossword puzzles. He loved baseball and especially enjoyed watching his favorite team, the Phillies.
He will be deeply missed by his family and friends, including his wife Shirley, with whom he would have celebrated 59 years of marriage on December 26th; his son, John R. Crompton, Jr. and wife Linda; his daughter, Lisa Crompton Lesky and husband Joe; his brother, William B. Crompton and wife Betty; two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, James R. Crompton.
Visitation will be held from 6 pm to 8 pm on Friday, December 14th, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle. A funeral service will be held at 9 am on Saturday, December 15th, at the funeral home. Interment will follow in St. Georges Cemetery on Kirkwood-St. Georges Road.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of John may be made to the Arthritis Foundation, 900 Prides Crossing, Ste. C111, Newark, DE 19713.
