Mr. Joseph Cannon, known fondly as “Sonny,” age 80, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Thursday, April 18, 2013.
A native Delawarean, Mr. Cannon was born in Wilmington on December 20, 1932, son of the late Nobel Cannon and Teresa Kiley Moses. He proudly served his country as a US Marine Corps combat veteran (1950-54) of the Korean War and would remain active in military organizations throughout his life, including the Korean War Veterans Association and Joseph B. Stahl Post #30, American Legion.
In civilian life, Mr. Cannon made his career with the General Motors Corporation at its former Boxwood Road site, where he retired as the body shop supervisor after over 37 years of service. He attended Asbury United Methodist Church for many years.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Beverly L. Knight Cannon; children, Donna Price (Danny) of Slaughter Beach, David Cannon (Diane) of Wilmington, and Denise Morton (Craig) of Milford; siblings, John Moses of Falls Church, VA, Margaret Libbey and William Moses, both of Pensacola, FL, Mary “Sissy” Leathem of Townsend, Virginia Miller of Missouri, and Josephine Anton of Townsend; grandchildren, William Haines (Laura), Mathew Haines, Christopher Morton, and Geoffrey Morton; and great grandchildren, Benjamin Haines, Elsie Haines, and Clara Haines. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Dorsey Moses, and by his son-in-law, William A. Haines.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, April 25, 2013, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will be held privately.
