Joseph “Joe” Potochney

May 2, 1923 - July 22, 2019

Joseph “Joe” Potochney, Dad, Pop Pop, Uncle Joe, Advisor, Counselor and Friend, age 96, of Newark, DE, left us on Monday, July 22, 2019, surrounded by his loving family, sharing stories and jokes until his last breath.

Born in Freeland, PA on May 2, 1923, he was a son of the late Michael and Helen (Sugar) Potochney. Joe was a proud WWII veteran, serving in the U.S. Army. He worked for Chrysler as an assembly worker for 37 years, retiring in 1987.

Joe was a devoted, loving father whose mission was to raise his 5 children and remain close to them. He followed his children and grandchildren on Facebook and always had a camera in hand at soccer, baseball and basketball games. He loved the outdoors and shared his knowledge of camping, fishing and boating with his wife and children. Joe served as past President of the Holy Family Leisure group and could be found every week as an usher at the 10 am Sunday Mass. In his later years, he enjoyed traveling by planes, trains and cruise ships. Joe remained active in the 1183 Auto Workers Union and spent most mornings at the UAW gym. He was also a member of American Legion Post #10.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 67 years Dolores Marie Potochney. He is survived by 5 children: Joseph, wife Elizabeth, Newark, DE: Dolores, husband Patrick, Wesley Chapel, FL; Robert, wife Natalie, Thononatossa, FL; Michael, wife Paula, Newark, DE; Steven, wife Kim, Norwalk, CT. Joe leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 16 great grand children who brought him great joy and happiness over many years.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am on Saturday, July 27, 2019, at Holy Family R.C. Church, 15 Gender Rd, Newark, DE 19713, where a Mass of Christian burial will be offered at 10 am. Interment will be held privately in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery.           In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Joe’s memory to Holy Family R.C. Church at the address listed above.
