Died: 2/9/2012

Mr. Joseph L. Savadel, age 87, of Newark, DE, passed away on Thursday, February 9, 2012.
Mr. Savadel was born in Staten Island, NY, on October 3, 1924, son of the late Lester Savadel and Marion Whalen Savadel. A US Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, he proudly served his country with the 388th Air Force as a navigator aboard the famed B-17 Flying Fortress (and would remain close to his fellow airmen throughout his life). In civilian life, Mr. Savadel made his career as an engineer prior to his retirement. His last position was with the Ford Motor Company at the automaker’s Lansdale, PA facility.
A devout Catholic from childhood, Mr. Savadel was a longtime member of Holy Family parish. In his leisure hours, he greatly enjoyed collecting model trains, woodworking, and cheering each season for his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Admired by family and friends alike for his keen intelligence and passion for learning, he also recently began teaching himself to play the piano.
Most of all, Mr. Savadel will be remembered as a devoted family man who took great pride in providing for his wife and children. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, and brother who will be deeply missed by the many people who loved him.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 62 years, Patricia McLaughlin Savadel; children, John Savadel (Sue) of Wilmington, DE, Karen Hinman (Richard) of Guilford, CT, Tim Savadel (Gail) of Haddon Heights, NJ, Lisa Alsher (Mike) of Enola, PA, Matthew Savadel of Newark, DE, and Jeffrey Savadel of Bismarck, ND; brother, Richard Savadel (Maureen) of Long Island, NY; brother-in-law, Barry McLaughlin of Newark, DE; twelve grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and many nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Kenneth Savadel, and sisters, Sister Marion Savadel and Eleanor Widmayer.
Visitation will be held from 11 am to 12 noon on Monday, February 13, 2012, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 W. Park Place, Newark, DE. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12:30 pm at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE.
