Joseph Michael “Mike” Smith III

Joseph Michael “Mike” Smith III, age 87, of New Castle, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, July 22, 2023.

Born in Philadelphia, PA on October 21, 1935, he was a son of the late Margaret (Kift) and Joseph M. Smith. Mike proudly served in the US Army.  He was a spot welder with General Motors for over 30 years.

Mike was a talented woodworker who enjoyed making beautiful gifts for others. He loved spending time with family and will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

In addition to his parents, Mike was preceded in death by his loving wife, Barbara J. Smith; daughter, Brenda Smith; and sisters, Irene McCarthy and Betty Feldman. He is survived by his sons, Joseph (Sandy) and Wayne Smith (Wanda); brothers, Frederick “Fritz” and Ronald Smith (Pat); sister, Janet Miles; many grandchildren; and several great grandchildren. The family would like to thank Cierra Reynolds for taking great care of Mike for the past few years, along with Sandy and Joe Reynolds.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 9 am until 10 am on Saturday, July 29, 2023, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 275 East Main Street, Middletown, DE, where a memorial service will begin at 10 am. Interment will be held privately at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Bear, DE.
