Joseph V. Hughes, Sr., age 93, of Newark, DE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 6, 2011.
Born in 1918, Joe was the oldest son of Ollie and Zelma Borders Hughes of St. Louis, MO. He lived in St. Louis until his enlistment into the US Navy. Joe served 21 years in the Navy through two wars, World War II and the Korean Conflict. After his naval service, he worked as a purchasing manager for the former Bancroft Corporation and then as an automobile salesperson for Liberty and Gambacorta Buick for many years. He was once awarded a national top sales award from Buick.
A devout Catholic throughout his life, Joe was a longtime member of Holy Family parish, where he served as an usher. He also remained active in the Fleet Reserve for many years.
Joe was an avid sportsman, playing baseball, soccer and golf most of his life. He enjoyed the Phillies and Eagles.
Joe was predeceased by his son, Joseph Jr. and daughter, Margaret Mary (Peggy) Symes. He is survived by his loving wife of 69 ½ years, Helen Nally Hughes of Island Heights, NJ; daughter, Patricia Wentz of Milwaukee, WI; son, Michael Hughes of Kennett Square, PA; eight grandchildren, Tara Wentz Hulbert, Mark Wentz, Jillian Martone, Brooke Hughes, Joseph Hughes III, Connor Hughes, Wyatt Hughes, and Logan Hughes; five great grandchildren; brother, Dan Hughes of Ft. Myers, FL; and sister, Maryann Addy of St. Louis, MO.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 12 noon on Friday, November 11, 2011, at the Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in All Saints Cemetery, 6001 Kirkwood Highway, Wilmington, DE.
