Josephine “Betty” Shahan

Josephine “Betty” Shahan, age 90, of New Castle, DE, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2025.
Born in New Castle, DE on April 16, 1935, she was a daughter of the late John and Helen (Cyle) Zawacki. Betty worked as a housekeeper at Howard Johnson for 14 years until her retirement.
Betty enjoyed spending her free time at the New Castle Moose Lodge as well as Delaware Park. She loved collecting Betty Boop memorabilia and going out to eat. Betty could often be found caring for her Goldfish Pond or indulging in her favorite meal, crabs. She will always be remembered for her sassy demeanor. Most of all, Betty loved taking care of her grandchildren and cherished the memories they made together.
In addition to her parents, Betty was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Shahan; and sons, Benjamin Shahan, James Shahan, and William Shahan. She is survived by her children, Carl F. Shahan, Sr. (Cheryl) of Clayton, John T. Shahan, Jr. (Paula) of Newark, Helen Foraker of New Castle, and Barbara Singer (Ken) of Newark; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE.

Barbara and Helen I am so sorry for the loss of your Loving Mother and Grandmother. I still hold dear the memories of long ago when our Moms co worked at HoJo’s. When she chaperoned our school trip to NYC. I remember well how her eyes shined when she gave even the slightest of a smile. May the Sweetness of her Love and her Joyful Laughter remain always with you.
