Leona C. Markel

Mrs. Leona Catherine Heisler Markel, age 82, formerly of Brookside in Newark, DE, passed away on Tuesday, March 26, 2013.
Born in Atglen, PA on April 5, 1930, Mrs. Markel was the daughter of the late Parke Heisler and Rose Markert Heisler. She was a talented homemaker throughout her life and had also been employed as a bus aide with the Christina School District, retiring in 1991 after 20 years of service. Previously, she had worked in professional child care and with the University of Delaware.
Active in her community, Mrs. Markel was a longtime member of Holy Family Church and the Newark Senior Center. She was also an avid walker. Most of all, she delighted in the company of her devoted family. A loving and fond Mom Mom, her happiest hours were spent caring for her beloved grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard E. Markel, and seven siblings. She is survived by her children, Richard S. Markel (Lori), Trudy A. Springer (Bill), and Kathleen L. Roenne (Rich); grandchildren, Erik, Kyle, Jennifer, Chelsea, Cody, Camryn, and Cassidy; and great grandson, Braxton.
A funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, March 30, 2013, in the chapel of Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in the adjoining memorial park.
