Loyd T. “Tom” Greenwell

February 27, 1940 - February 23, 2024

Loyd T. “Tom” Greenwell, age 83, of Delaware City, DE, passed away on Friday, February 23, 2024.

Born in Johnson City, TN on February 27, 1940, he was a son of the late William A. and Virginia H. (Holloway) Greenwell. Tom moved to Delaware where he worked as a skilled carpenter for many years. During his time in there, he met his beloved wife of 42 years, Barbara.

A friend to the community, Tom spent many years helping friends with home repairs, lawn mower repairs, and any type of home improvement. He and Barbara enjoyed going to their favorite spot, Delaware Park, for many years. Tom loved to watch horse racing, play the slots with his 3 girls, and looked forward to birthday dinner celebrations. He liked walking around Delaware City, stopping along the way to chat with friends. Tom could often be found fishing or hunting with his sons, tending to his vegetable garden, and spending time in his yard. He spent his Sunday’s watching football and cheering on his favorite team, the Philadelphia Eagles. Tom also loved watching old Western shows, Western movies, and listening to old school country music. He also enjoyed taking long rides on country roads with Ralph and stopping at Willey’s. Above all, Tom cherished his family and loved making memories with them.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; brothers, William, Millard, Doran, Jackie, and Rick; sisters, Betty Markland, Mary Greenwell, and Patsy Freeman; children, Paul, Ronnie, and Jeffrey; grandson, Lil Joey; and daughter-in-law, Helen Reader Nost. He is survived by his siblings, Louise Ray (Jerry) and Susan Daugherty; children, Patricia Glenn (Dub), Cheryl L. Griffin, Laura Nost-Jones (Ralph), Arthur “Biggie” Nost, Joseph “Joe” Nost, and Jacob “Jake” Nost; and a host of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

The Greenwell family would like to extend a special thank you to granddaughter, Tia Griffin, for helping with medical decisions and a peaceful transition.

All services will be held privately.

  • I just discovered you had passed on. I know Barbara was happy to see you! I remember you always being there when I visited Barbara with my sisters. I liked hanging out, watching the Andy Griffith Show with you. When you found out I was from NH, you started teasing me about being an old hill billy, and that’s what we called each other from then on. I miss those days. I miss you and Barbara. Glad you are reunited though. Two good souls who will certainly be missed.
