Luis R. Mercado, age 73, of Wilmington, DE, passed away on Thursday, September 10, 2020.
Born in Puerto Rico on May 7, 1947, he was a son of the late Baltazar and Emilia (Figueroa) Mercado. Luis worked in production for a manufacturing company. In his spare time, he enjoyed cheering on the Philadelphia Phillies and drinking an ice-cold Coors Light. Luis loved attending BBQ’s and cherished time spent with his family and beloved dog, Nana.
In addition to his parents, Luis was preceded in death by his stepson, Luis Guillermo Cruz and granddaughter, Sierra Mercado. He is survived by his children, Christina Smith of Millsboro, Luis R. Mercado of Spartanburg, SC, Christopher Mercado of Millsboro, Roman Mercado of Millsboro, Edward Mercado of Bear and Daniel Mercado of Elkton, MD; stepchildren, Santiago Cruz of New Castle, Digna M. Cruz of Wilmington, Isabelle Ginorio of Wilmington and Jose Cruz of New Castle; sisters, Iris Gonzalez-Mercado, Luz Mercado and Lydia Mercado; brother, Gillberto Figueroa Mercado; his lifelong partner, Digna Cruz; 31 grandchildren; and 35 great grandchildren.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 3 pm until 4 pm on Friday, September 18, 2020 at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 North DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE, where a funeral service will begin at 4 pm. A graveside service will begin at 10 am on Monday September 21, 2020, at Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 North DuPont Highway, New Castle, DE. Face masks will be required for all in attendance.
