Madge Adeline Johnson, age 99, of Newark, DE, passed away on Friday, July 8, 2016.

Born in Ridgely, MD on November 25, 1916, she was a daughter of the late William Earl and Ethel Elizabeth Frampton Cecil. Madge started school in Ridgley and continued her schooling within the former Newark School District. The family moved to the Bear area onto what was then known as the Justice Farm and later into a bungalow on Rt. 40 on the property now known as Countryside Gardens. She left that family home to start her own family, marrying George Wilkins Johnson in October, 1939 and together the couple shared 72 years of marriage. Strong in her faith, Madge was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, as well as a member of the Red Hat Society. She was an avid Phillies fan and in her leisure time enjoyed reading, making various crafts and quilts. Madge adored going to the beach and visiting her brother’s cabin in Vermont.

She was preceded in death by her father, William Earl Cecil (March, 1947); mother, Edna Elizabeth Frampton Cecil (Sept., 1972); husband, George Wilkins Johnson (March, 2011), infant daughter, Edna Mae Johnson; sister, Ethel Betty Elizabeth Deery (April, 1979); brothers, William “Dick” Earl Cecil (wife, Dorothy) and Daniel Addison Cecil (April, 1996) (wife, Rachael); and brother-in-law, Louis C. Stidham (April, 2010).

Those left to celebrate her life are her son, George E. Johnson (Lydia Esther Wilson) of Newark; grandchildren, Melissa L. McVey (Scott), Cecily A. Luevano (Anthony) and Forest R. Wilson; great grandchild, Jemma L. Luevano; and her sister, Ida Mae Cecil Stidham.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Saturday morning, July 16, 2016, at the Salem United Methodist Church, 469 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE 19702, where a funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in the White Clay Creek Cemetery, 15 Polly Drummond Hill Road, Newark, DE.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Salem United Methodist Church at the address listed above or contributions to assist the family to defray funeral expenses, c/o Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 1000 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE 19720.

  • Sending my condolences to the Johnson family. Madge was a great person who will be dearly missed. I’m glad to have gotten to know her over the years.

  • Madge will be truly missed she was always helping with the Ham and Oyster Dinners mixing up the egg batter and also padding the oysters. She even come when she didn’t feel like it and we had to take her home. She was truly a dedicated member of Salem United Methodist Church. She always helped when she was able. I know she is happy now and she is with George and suffering no longer. RIP dear Madge we will truly miss you.
