Margaret A. Sykes, age 88, of Newark, DE, formerly of Staten Island, NY, passed away peacefully on Thursday, February 14, 2013.
Margaret was employed with Bethlehem Steel in New York City for 20 years. She was a talented and dedicated homemaker who delighted in caring for her family and was best known for her homemade jam. She was a longtime member of Holy Family R.C. Church. In her leisure, she enjoyed time at the Newark Senior Center playing mahjong with friends, shopping, and spending summers in Ocean City (a funnel cake was a must!). Nothing meant more than time spent with her beloved family and friends.
Margaret was preceded in death by her husband, John T. Sykes. She is survived by her children, John M. Sykes of S.I., NY, Peggy Sykes and companion Kevin Mendes of Matawan, NJ, and Colleen Sykes and fiancé Michael Debbrecht of Newark, DE; granddaughter, Heather Tormey of Colts Neck, NJ; grandson, Sean Sykes of Jupiter, FL; 4 great grandchildren; and faithful canine companion, Chloe, whom she adored.
Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 1 pm on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at Holy Family R.C. Church, E. Chestnut Hill and Gender Roads, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 12 noon. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association of Delaware or to Little Sisters of the Poor.
