Marie C. Severin - Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Homes & Crematory

Marie C. Severin

March 25, 1936 - November 29, 2020

Marie C. Severin, age 84, of Dover, DE formerly of New Castle, DE passed away on Sunday, November 29, 2020.

Born on March 25, 1936 in Historic New Castle, DE, Marie was a daughter of the late James J. and Helen G. (Young) McHugh. She graduated from St. Peter’s High School in New Castle, DE, in 1954. After graduating, Marie married her husband in 1955 and raised her family in the New Castle and Newark areas. She pursued various career paths throughout her life, including working for the public-school system, selling furs at John Wanamaker and Strawbridge & Clothier Department Stores, plus managing a Gloria Marshall Weight Loss Center. Marie took pride in her last job as a real estate agent for Sunvest. She relished her home at the beach, where she spent many happy occasions entertaining her family and friends. Above all, Marie cherished spending time with her family, whom she loved dearly. In describing their mother, her children readily defined her as fearless, since she was always willing to try new things. In Marie’s many travels, she never met a stranger, only a friend in the making.

In addition to her parents, Marie is preceded in death by her devoted husband, Martin J. Severin, Sr.; son, Martin J. Severin II; and sister, Helen Bacon. She is survived by her children, Ann Marie Anibal (James) of Middletown, Elaine Ayers (David) of Rehoboth, Michael Severin (Traci) of Ashburn, VA, and Maureen Massey (Ronnie) of Bear; siblings, Patricia Schmidt and Theresa Waltz; 10 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, all services will be held privately. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Marie’s memory to Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market Street, Suite 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106.

  • The thing I remember most about Aunt Marie is her smile. I don’t have an image in my mind where her smile doesn’t exist. It’s the same smile I see in my Severin cousins too. I am so sorry for your loss. God bless all the family and friends who were touched by this wonderful inspirational woman.

Our thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families. Mary Jane and I have been sharing many memories of Aunt Marie over the last few days. Your mom was always so happy and welcoming. Years ago, we would pop in your place in Fenwick and Montego Bay from time to time and Aunt Marie always always made us feel so welcomed. When we visited Daytona many years ago she insisted we stay at your motel for a few nights. Such fun times they were. Your mom was one of a kind, always smiling and laughing. Our sincerest condolences are with each of you.

    Love and miss you all,

    Jim and Mary Jane

  • Marie was a beautiful person who loved life and her family. I always enjoyed seeing her and spending time talking with her. Her laughter filled the room as she talked about her children, grandchildren, and her old friends.

  • Beautiful video for a beautiful woman❤️ Sending lots of love to you all.

  • Marie was truly one of a kind. She was such a kind hearted person and so much fun to be around. I was lucky to have her as a neighbor and also a co-worker when I worked part-time at Strawbridge and Clothier. She always made me laugh and had fun stories. Marie was quite the traveler as you never knew where her next venture was. All I can say now is heaven has gained an angel and my mom and her will be together again while they both watch over their children, grandchildren and friends.

  • Mike, Renee, Elaine, and Ann Marie, What a beautiful video tribute of your mother. Her beauty, her smile, her laughter, her zest for life, her love for her family; you can almost feel the emotion she’s feeling jump right from the computer screen and land into your heart as you watch it. She truly is a genuine gem. Praying for all of you during these difficult days ahead. It’s never easy to say goodbye to someone you love so much and who has filled your life with so much happiness, tenderness and love.
