Marjorie Bernadette Gray
April 9, 1945 - September 26, 2024
With heavy hearts, we are sad to announce that after a hard-fought battle with dementia, Marjorie “Marge”, passed away peacefully into eternal rest on September 26, 2024, at Newark Manor in Delaware, surrounded by loved ones. She was 79 years old.
Born on April 9, 1945, in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret Gray. Marjorie grew up with her two older brothers and younger sister in Douglaston, NY and graduated from Bayside High School in New York. She began a 28-year career with DuPont Co. as a textile sales representative in New York, later transferring to California followed by Delaware, where she settled in Newark and made her home. She later found her renewed purpose assisting students with disabilities, working as a bus aide for Red Clay School District, until her retirement in 2017 after more than 10 years of service.
Marjorie’s Catholic faith was most important to her. She honored her beliefs weekly during Saturday mass at the Oratory on the University of Delaware Campus. Her generous spirit and quick wit touched everyone she met. She was strong and independent, never letting life’s challenges hold her back. Always ready for an adventure, she enjoyed a very active lifestyle in the community. She loved strolling through the neighborhood, tending to her garden, making pottery, attending water aerobics at the local YMCA, kayaking in the Delaware State Parks, watching a “good” Mets baseball game, going to the beach or attending one of the summer concerts in the park. Though above all, she cherished spending time with her family and cats the most.
Marjorie will be lovingly remembered as a devoted mother by her son, Timothy (Susan) Gray of DE; as well as a loving sister by Patricia Winter (nee Gray) of NY; and sister-in-law, Joan Gray of NC; a proud “auntie” to 9 beloved nieces and nephews; and many more grand nieces and nephews, and a wonderful friend to many.
The Gray family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to the dedicated healthcare professionals of Newark Manor who compassionately cared for Marjorie during her time there.
A visitation for family and friends will be held from 10 am until 11 am on Friday, October 11, 2024, at Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, DE, where a memorial service celebrating Marjorie’s life will begin at 11 am. Inurnment will be held privately.
Marjorie was an avid animal lover and requested that in lieu of flowers, donations to help animals in need be made in her memory to Brandywine Valley SPCA, 290 Churchmans Road, New Castle, Delaware 19720 or online by clicking here.
“Those we love don’t go away. They Walk beside us every day.
Unseen, unheard, but always near, still loved, still missed and very dear.”
