Martha E. Carter

Mrs. Martha E. Carter, age 75, of St. Georges, DE, passed away on Friday, December 23, 2011.

Born in Norristown, PA, on June 29, 1936, Mrs. Carter was the daughter of the late James A. Burns and Martha E. Hollinger Burns. She made her career as an administrative assistant at the Delaware City Refinery until her retirement in 2000.

Active in her community, Mrs. Carter was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, the M & C Athletic Club, and the Delaware City Recreation Club, where she was a former officer. An avid Phillies fan throughout her life, she often attended home games.

Mrs. Carter was a loving wife and mother who delighted in caring for her family, especially her beloved grandson. She also greatly enjoyed spending time with her many good friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas N. Carter in 1988, by a son, Michael Joseph Carter in 1983, by brothers, James, Robert and Raymond Burns, and by sisters, Dorothy Wells and Mildred Laver. Mrs. Carter is survived by her sons, Thomas N. Carter, Jr. of Pine Hill, NJ, and Brian P. Carter (Stephanie) of Towson, MD; brother, Jack Burns of Norristown, PA; sister, Virginia Scheetz of Flower Mound, TX; and grandson, Brendan Carter, as well as many nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Friday, December 30, 2011, at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 214 Clinton Street, Delaware City, where visitation will begin at 10 am. Interment will follow in Delaware City Cemetery.
