Mrs. Martha L. Akulin, age 70, of Newark, DE, passed away on Monday, April 16, 2012.
Mrs. Akulin was born in Pennington Gap, VA, on Valentine’s Day 1942, daughter of the late Jim Flanigan and Mae Johnson Flanigan. For many years she was the owner and operator of a successful local private cleaning company.
A talented homemaker throughout her life, she delighted in cooking, cleaning, and caring for her beloved family. She also enjoyed listening to country music.
Mrs. Akulin was a devout Christian and looked forward to attending church each Sunday.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Owen J. Akulin; children, Trina Ostling of Portsmouth, VA, James Barnett of Gloucester, VA, Lisa Love of Virginia Beach, VA, Terri Tabaac of New Jersey, Lori Deussing of Ambler, PA, and Michael Akulin of Chesapeake, VA; brother, Matt D. Flanigan of Arcadia, IN; sister, Kitty Fultz-Roberts of New Castle, DE; 11 grandchildren; and 6 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by siblings, Evelyn Rigsby, Peggy Cook, Bernice Tomlinson, and Clyde Flanigan.
A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, April 20, 2012, at the Newark United Pentecostal Church, 73 Salem Church Road, Newark, DE, where visitation will begin at 11 am. Interment will follow in Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Parkway, New Castle, DE.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 399 Market Street, Ste. 102, Philadelphia, PA 19106; or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
