Mary H. Jones

September 22, 1938 - August 22, 2021

Mary H. Jones, affectionately known as “Peanut”, age 82, of Wilmington, DE, and formerly of Middletown, DE, Altavista, VA, and NY, passed away on Sunday, August 22, 2021.

Born in Grayson County, VA, on September 22, 1938, she was a daughter of the late Samuel and Bettie (Anthony) Parsons. Mary worked as a transport supervisor for Harlem Hospital in NY.

In the 1980’s, Mary and several women in the community started the first ever community produce garden, providing fresh, healthy fruits and vegetables for the community. This garden is still thriving today. Under her leadership, she also started a drug rehabilitation treatment recovery program in South Jamaica Community Center during the crack epidemic. Mary was successful in saving many lives, reuniting families, and getting men and women free of their addictions. After her retirement, she stayed active by starting a new career at New York City Housing in South Jamaica, Queens with the food distribution program to help under privileged families. Mary also cooked at Natalie Luncheonette and August Martin High School, serving lunch and mentoring the youth.

In her spare time, she enjoyed being in the kitchen, cooking, and baking. She loved to dance and garden. Mary was a devout Jehovah’s Witness, reading the bible every day. She could recall verses from scripture to help with any life problems others might be facing. Most of all, Mary loved her family, and enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-granddaughter.

Mary was known as a pillar of the community. She will be remembered for her kindness and positive attitude. Mary always greeted others with a hello and a friendly smile. She left a lasting impression on everyone she met. Mary had a way of making people feel special and loved. She was always willing to give help to others.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert. E. Jones; son, Michael Hale; and brothers, Claude Parsons, Freddie Parsons, Larry Parsons, Ecka Parsons, and Herbie Parsons. Mary is survived by her children, Natalie J. Jamerson (Kevin) of Middletown and Roscoe Hale (Precious) of Rochester, NY; siblings, Otis Parsons of Queens, NY and Mary Parsons of Utica, NY; 8 grandchildren; and 1 great-granddaughter.

All services will be held privately.
