Mary H. (Kuhar) Smith

January 26, 1949 - May 22, 2020

Mary H. (Kuhar) Smith, age 71, of Townsend, DE, passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Friday, May 22, 2020. Born in Scranton, PA on January 26, 1949, she was the daughter of the late George and Dezzi Mae (Graves) Kuhar.

Mary married the love of her life, John Calvin Smith, on March 4, 1967, and graduated from Conrad High School that same year.  Her greatest joy in life was being a wife to her husband, a mother to her children, Tammy, Dee and Chris, and a MomMom to her seven grandchildren, Madyson, Skylar, Marissa, Cayla, Noah, Gracie, and Corbin. While she was raising her family, she obtained her bachelor’s degree in accounting from Wilmington College in May of 1996.  Mary was an accountant and office manager for Benchmark Builders for over 20 years.

She enjoyed relaxing at her beach house, shopping at the outlets, bowling, going to old car shows with friends and singing karaoke at AMVETS in Longneck. MOST of all, Mary loved spending time with her family, friends and grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Betty Rowe, Evelyn Pennington, Georgiann Kuhar, and Susie O’Connor. Mary will be dearly missed by her husband, John Calvin Smith; daughters, Tammy Beal (Jeff) and Diane Bowers (Bob); son, Chris Smith; grandchildren, Madyson, Skylar, Marissa, Cayla, Noah, Gracie, and Corbin and sisters Cathy Kuhar and Jean Fogarty (Joe).

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, services are private.

  • I didn’t know mrs Smith very well, but I knew her for the last few years of her life. I had a beach house right across the street from hers and would always hang out with her grandkids. Anytime I talked to her, she would treat me like I was one of her own. She is one of the nicest persons I’ve ever meant. I know she is in a much better place now.
