Mary Jane Payne, age 81, of Townsend, DE, passed away on Sunday, March 15, 2026.

Born in Wilmington, DE, on February 11, 1945, she was a daughter of the late Edward and Hannah (Riale) Thompson. Mary made her career as a CNA at various physicians’ offices.

Mary’s happiest moments were spent on the water. She enjoyed boating on the Chester River and loved taking trips to Cape May, NJ. Mary cherished the time she spent with her family, especially her grandchildren. She was affectionately known as “Mom-Mom” to her loved ones. Mary could often be found baking and cooking, making sure all were well fed.

Mary is survived by her husband of 62 years, Donald E. Payne, Jr.; daughter, Kristi Lester (Todd, Sr.); grandchildren, Shannon Kirwin (Justin), Todd Lester, Jr. (Danielle), Tyler Lester (Morgan), and Shane Lester (Heather); great-grandchildren, Jaxon, LT, Westen, Presley, Aubree, Harper, Adrianna, and Richard; canine companion, Cookie; and honorary children, Paul, Jacqui and Christopher Lester.

The Payne family would like to extend a special thank you to Amber and Mary at Delaware Hospice for their care and compassion.

    My heart, my prayers my thoughts are with you. Mary was a good person and a good friend and neighbor.
    I know it will be a great lost but just remember she is always by your side.

  • I was heartbroken to hear of cousin Mary’s passing. I am sure everyone who met her loved her. She was a beautiful person, inside and out. Condolences to her loving family. GOD HAS A NEW ANGEL. My mother, Sis Wilson, will be there to meet her.
